16:30-17:30 Europe and America's Fiscal Future

Daniel J. Mitchell, PhD, Senior Fellow, Cato Institute, USA (bio)

Mitchell put into context Washington’s recent debt-ceiling standoff and the subsequent U.S. credit rating downgrade. He also discussed the tax-and-spend mentality that has led Europe and America to this point and what needs to be done to put our economy back on firm ground.

18:00-19:00 Learning from Other's Mistakes: America and Europe's Failed Banking System

Mark A. Calabria, PhD, Director of Financial Regulation Studies, Cato Institute, USA (bio)

Banking crises in both America and Europe have cost taxpayers billions, as well as contributing to continued recessionary pressures around the world.  While legislators and regulators have offered the appearance of reform, the substance of such reform has only extended an existing failed framework of bank regulation. Calabria offered an analysis of the dominant framework for banking regulation, along with proposals for reforming that system to avoid future systemic banking crises.

The event was moderated by Ian Vasquez, Cato Institute, USA.
